Nearly 500 ways to make a yoga mat sandwich

Thursday, February 27, 2014
By David Andrews, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, and Elaine Shannon, Editor-in-chief and publisher
If you’ve planked on a yoga mat, slipped on flip-flops, extracted a cell phone from protective padding or lined an attic with foam insulation, chances are you’ve had a brush with an industrial chemical called azodicarbonamide, nicknamed ADA. In the plastics industry, ADA is the “chemical foaming agent” of choice. It is mixed into polymer plastic gel to generate tiny gas bubbles, something like champagne for plastics. The results are materials that are strong, light, spongy and malleable.
As few Americans realized until Vani Hari, creator of FoodBabe.com, spotlighted it earlier this month, you’ve probably eaten ADA. This industrial plastics chemical shows up in many commercial baked goods as a “dough conditioner” that renders large batches of dough easier to handle and makes the finished products puffier and tough enough to withstand shipping and storage. According to the new EWG Food Database of ingredients in 80,000 foods, now under development, ADA turns up in nearly 500 items and in more than 130 brands of bread, bread stuffing and snacks, including many advertised as “healthy.”
EWG researchers who are constructing the database found that ADA is listed as an ingredient on the labels of many well-known brands of bread, croutons, pre-made sandwiches and snacks, including Ball Park, Butternut, Country Hearth, Fleischman’s, Food Club, Harvest Pride, Healthy Life, Jimmy Dean, Joseph Campione, Kroger, Little Debbie, Mariano’s, Marie Callendar’s, Martin’s, Mother’s, Pillsbury, Roman Meal, Sara Lee, Schmidt, Shoprite, Safeway, Smucker’s, Sunbeam, Turano, Tyson, Village Hearth and Wonder.

Do you like Turkey Bacon?

So, I have tried over and over eating turkey bacon! Just was nothing like the "real" turkey that I've grown up with. Sometimes even change isn't enough. After soo many times I just couldn't do turkey bacon, no matter how I tried it.

Yesterday, I decided try one more time. There has to be a way to eat this and enjoy less calories. So, one thing I found was cooking the bacon in the oven on broil. Awww..... this was amazing! This I could eat! Much better taste and lots of great flavor! Who knew, this could be the answer.

I went over to my friends how and she was cooking turkey bacon hotdogs and turkey bacon. Oh my, are you kidding me --- this is going to be tons of calories and just not for me. Well sure enough -- I had to try! I feel in love with what she made.

What are your thoughts? Do you like turkey bacon?

Glad Wildtree gives ideas on recipes, but love more and more. Pintrest is my favorite for sure!

What is Ghee Butter?

Ghee and Its Benefits: When you think of butter, you probably picture that rich, creamy medium you cook many of your favorite meals in; but not all butter looks, acts or tastes the same. Ghee or clarified butter, for example, is what you get when you remove the water and the milk solids, resulting in a pure butterfat.

When butter is cooked long enough for the water in the butter to completely evaporate and for the milk solids to brown and produce a nutty flavor, you get a butter product called ghee. Ghee has a long history in Indian culture-and many other parts of the world!-for its use not only in meal preparation, but in holistic remedies as well. If you’ve never tried ghee, you may want to consider it for one of these delicious or healthy applications:
Use ghee to fight inflammation: Ghee has been shown to reduce leukotriene secretion and reduce prostaglandin. Prostaglandin levels and leukotriene secretion both play a role in inflammation, which can not only lead to unpleasant physical reactions (redness, swelling, itchiness, etc.), but it can also accelerate the aging process.

There is a whole world of tasty and nutritious foods!

There is a whole world of tasty and nutritious foods available today that are just waiting to be discovered. “Adding more nutrition and pleasure to each meal is as easy as expanding the range of foods you choose." says registered dietitian and Academy spokesperson Constance Brown-Riggs. Whether shopping at the grocery store, eating at a local restaurant or cooking meals at home, Brown-Riggs offers easy steps to keep your taste buds excited while making sure your body is getting the nutrients it needs.

At the grocery store:
When shopping, make it a point to try one new fruit, vegetable or whole grain every week. "You can start small by picking a different type of apple, a different color potato or a new flavor of whole-grain rice until you are comfortable picking entirely new things that you’ve never tried or heard of before," Brown-Riggs says.
Eating at restaurants:
The next time you and your family head out to eat, choose a restaurant that features ethnic foods from Asia, Europe or Africa. These restaurants often feature menus filled with healthy options that will be new to you. "You can also find a local restaurant that specializes in using seasonal ingredients. Frequently you will be able to order your favorite dish but with a new and exciting flavor twist," Brown-Riggs says.
Add variety to your staple dishes by varying the ways you cook them. Grill or broil the chicken you typically bake. Mash the potatoes you typically roast. Steam the vegetables you typically sauté. And get to know your spice cabinet. "A pinch of this and a dash of that can add a fresh zest to an old favorite," Brown-Riggs says.
"Remember, you have about 10,000 taste buds. So don't be afraid to experiment with new flavors and foods," Brown-Riggs says.

March is National Nutrition Month!

March is National Nutrition Month!

March is National Nutrition Month! "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right" is the theme for National Nutrition Month® 2014. According to www.eatright.org, consumer research confirms that taste tops nutrition as the main reason why one food is purchased over another. "When taste is the most influential factor driving what consumers eat, it is important that we find the balance between choosing the foods we like with those that provide the nutrients we need," said registered dietitian, nutritionist, and Academy President Dr. Glenna McCollum. "This year's 'Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right' theme reinforces that the two choices are not mutually exclusive." You shouldn’t have to choose taste over health! Wildtree was founded on the premise that food should be natural, nutritious, delicious and easy to prepare – all at the same time. Instead of “good for you” foods with all the flavor of sawdust, Wildtree products are taste-tested winners!

could blame you when they have names like bleaching and deodorizing?
This month on Food Science: Fact? or Fiction! we are going to discuss
the four processes that oils commonly go through and show that they are
chemical free, harmless, and sometimes necessary for a quality, safe
oil. As always, expect solid facts and a ton of fun!
